Liverpool have suffered a huge injury blow during their UEFA Champions League quarter-final second leg clash with reigning champions Paris Saint-Germain at Anfield.

With the Reds trailing 2-0 from the first leg at the Parc des Princes, they need as much firepower as they can get their hands on to overturn the deficit and reach the semi-finals.

But those chances were hampered when Hugo Ekitike went down with a bad-looking injury that forced him to be stretchered off just half an hour into the contest.

Ekitike was not even involved in any sort of challenge when he hit the turf. Dominik Szoboszlai played a pass towards the French striker, but as he turned to make a move towards the ball, his leg appeared to give way and he went down in a heap, with play going on for a number of seconds until it was realised he was in real discomfort.

Speaking on Amazon Prime’s coverage, former Newcastle striker Alan Shearer said: “He went to control the ball and then sort of slipped over.

“He looks in pain. It doesn’t look good at all, if it’s his ankle or his Achilles or anything like that, but it doesn’t look nice unfortunately.”

Manager Arne Slot will now be sweating on the fitness of his French striker for the final few games of the Premier League season, with Alexander Isak only just returning from a long-term injury himself.

Isak started the Champions League clash with PSG alongside Ekitike, but Mohamed Salah was brought on to replace the France man, which will leave Slot with an issue later on in the game.

With Isak only just returning from injury, the plan was to give the Swede 45-60 minutes only, with Salah the likeliest one to replace him. That is now not possible with a rejig potentially required in the second half, should the former Newcastle man
