Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk has openly acknowledged that the Reds need to get better at defending set pieces â an area that has cost them too many goals this season. After Saturdayâs narrow 2-1 win over Wolves, the Dutch centre-half didnât hide the fact that Liverpoolâs current record from dead-ball situations is a real concern.
So far, 12 of Liverpoolâs 26 goals conceded in the league have come from set pieces, and theyâve only managed to score three times from similar situations themselves â numbers that underline their struggles compared to rivals.
Van Dijk admitted the issue âhurtsâ and stressed that the team must work hard to turn things around. He pointed out that itâs often what happens after the first contact â the second phase of a set-piece â that causes problems, and that improving this will take repetition, analysis, and focused training.
âItâs not been good enough,â he said, emphasising the squadâs determination to address the shortcoming.
