Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk has openly acknowledged that the Reds need to get better at defending set pieces — an area that has cost them too many goals this season. After Saturday’s narrow 2-1 win over Wolves, the Dutch centre-half didn’t hide the fact that Liverpool’s current record from dead-ball situations is a real concern.
So far, 12 of Liverpool’s 26 goals conceded in the league have come from set pieces, and they’ve only managed to score three times from similar situations themselves — numbers that underline their struggles compared to rivals.
Van Dijk admitted the issue “hurts” and stressed that the team must work hard to turn things around. He pointed out that it’s often what happens after the first contact — the second phase of a set-piece — that causes problems, and that improving this will take repetition, analysis, and focused training.
“It’s not been good enough,” he said, emphasising the squad’s determination to address the shortcoming.
