Liverpool could be forced to switch their attention to Newcastle United winger Anthony Gordon—but only if Luis Diaz leaves Anfield this summer.
Former England shot-stopper Paul Robinson, speaking on Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, revealed that a potential swoop for Gordon hinges entirely on Diaz’s situation. As things stand, Liverpool are not expected to make a move unless there’s a major shift.
Despite turning down two bids from Bayern Munich, Diaz’s future remains uncertain. The Reds have reportedly slapped a £69 million price tag on the Colombian, and while Bayern have tested the waters, no deal has materialized yet.
However, insiders suggest that if Diaz starts pushing for an exit or begins talks behind the scenes, Liverpool might revisit their long-standing interest in Gordon. The 24-year-old winger, who remains under contract at Newcastle, wouldn’t come cheap—especially considering his growing influence at St. James’ Park.
“There’s simply no room to accommodate Gordon at Liverpool while Diaz is still there,” Robinson explained. “But if Diaz signals he wants out and pushes for a move, things could change very quickly.”
Liverpool’s interest in Gordon reportedly dates back to earlier this summer, with suggestions of a possible late-window move brewing.
Meanwhile, the Reds are making moves elsewhere in the attack. Hugo Ekitike appears to be nearing a transfer to Anfield, which has all but ended the club’s interest in Crystal Palace striker Jean-Philippe Mateta. Though Liverpool did meet with Mateta’s representatives recently, the club is no longer actively pursuing a deal for the Frenchman—unless other plans fall through.
