Xabi Alonso Reportedly Plans Major Liverpool Shake-Up With Four Signings and Five Departures

Xabi Alonso could be preparing for a dramatic rebuild at Liverpool if he is chosen to replace Arne Slot at Anfield.

Liverpool’s recent struggles deepened on Saturday after a damaging 3–2 defeat away to Bournemouth, a result that ended their 13-match unbeaten streak. The loss has intensified scrutiny on Slot, with the Reds now sixth in the Premier League and winless in the league since their narrow victory over Wolves in late December.

As pressure continues to mount, speculation is growing that Liverpool may look elsewhere for leadership. Should Slot lose his job, Alonso is widely viewed as one of the club’s leading candidates, given his past ties to Liverpool and recent managerial experience.

Reports suggest that if the former midfielder takes charge, he would not hesitate to reshape the squad entirely. According to Spanish outlet Fichajes, Alonso would push for four high-profile additions while also sanctioning the exit of five current first-team players.

Alonso’s reported transfer targets

The same report claims Alonso’s top defensive priority would be Tottenham centre-back Micky van de Ven. The 24-year-old has already been linked with a move to Anfield, and Alonso is said to regard him as a long-term successor to Virgil van Dijk, whose performances this season have reportedly raised concerns.

Midfield reinforcements would also be high on the agenda. Crystal Palace’s Adam Wharton is believed to be admired by Alonso, who sees the young midfielder as a solution to Liverpool’s lack of energy and control in the middle of the park.

In attack, the overhaul could be even more eye-catching. Alonso is reportedly keen on adding Paris Saint-Germain winger Bradley Barcola, alongside Bayern Munich star Michael Olise, who has continued to enhance his reputation as one of Europe’s most exciting attacking talents.

Five players could be shown the exit

To finance such ambitious recruitment plans, departures would be unavoidable. The report claims Alonso has already identified several players he would be willing to move on.

Ibrahima Konaté is said to be one possible casualty, with Alonso reportedly open to letting the defender leave when his contract expires this summer. The Frenchman has faced criticism this season despite strong interest from top European clubs in the recent past.

Midfield changes could be even more surprising. Alexis Mac Allister and Ryan Gravenberch are both reportedly candidates for sale, despite being under contract until 2028. Their potential exits would raise eyebrows, especially given their roles in Liverpool’s title success last season.

Cody Gakpo is another name linked with a possible departure. His performances have divided opinion, and reports suggest a new manager may decide to move in a different direction.

Perhaps the most headline-grabbing claim involves Mohamed Salah. Alonso is reportedly prepared to sanction the sale of the Liverpool icon if the Egyptian decides to end his long stay at the club this summer, with Michael Olise viewed as a potential successor.

While nothing is confirmed, the reports paint a picture of a bold and uncompromising vision—one that could dramatically change Liverpool’s squad if Xabi Alonso does return to Anfield as manager.
