Mohamed Salah’s long wait for international glory continues after Egypt suffered another painful Africa Cup of Nations disappointment. The Pharaohs were knocked out of the tournament on Wednesday night, losing 1-0 to Senegal in the semi-finals.
It marks yet another near-miss for the Liverpool star, who has now competed in five AFCON tournaments without lifting the trophy. He came closest in 2017 and 2022, reaching the finals on both occasions, but Egypt were defeated by Cameroon and Senegal respectively.
With Salah set to celebrate his 34th birthday in June, time is beginning to run out on his dream of becoming an African champion. Despite his legendary status at club level and numerous personal accolades, continental success with his national team remains frustratingly out of reach.
One More Game Left for Egypt
Although their title hopes are over, Egypt still have one match remaining in the competition. They will face Nigeria in the third-place playoff on Saturday.
Coincidentally, that fixture falls on the same day Liverpool host Burnley in the Premier League. Naturally, many Reds fans are wondering whether Salah could be recalled early to feature at Anfield instead.
However, reports suggest that this is highly unlikely.
According to sources close to the club, Liverpool are keen to respect Egypt’s involvement in the tournament and will allow their captain to complete his international duties. That means Salah is expected to remain with his national side until after the playoff before returning to Merseyside.
Club and Country Relationship a Factor
Liverpool are believed to be mindful of maintaining a positive relationship with the Egyptian Football Association. Back in November, Egypt agreed to rest Salah from a friendly match after securing World Cup qualification – a gesture appreciated by the Reds.
There has also been previous tension surrounding the forward’s international commitments, particularly when he left AFCON early in 2024 due to injury, which led to criticism from Egypt manager Hossam Hassan.
Given those factors, Liverpool appear unwilling to create any unnecessary friction by demanding his early release.
When Will Salah Be Back in Action?
Even without their talisman, Arne Slot’s side have performed impressively, remaining unbeaten during his absence. The squad has coped well, and there is confidence they can manage one more game without him.
The most realistic target for Salah’s return is next Wednesday’s Champions League clash away to Marseille. That match is seen as the ideal opportunity for him to be reintegrated into the team.
Of course, there is also the matter of his recent frustrations at club level. His emotional reaction after Liverpool’s 3-3 draw with Leeds earlier this month raised a few eyebrows, and fans will be hoping to see him respond strongly on the pitch.
So while supporters may have to wait a few extra days, all signs point to Salah pulling on the famous red shirt again very soon – hopefully with renewed focus and determination.
