Liverpool’s summer transfer plans have taken an intriguing turn after their pursuit of Alexander Isak hit a dead end. With Newcastle United making it clear their Swedish talisman is not available at any price, the Reds are now focusing on Eintracht Frankfurt’s Hugo Ekitike — and many believe he could eventually surpass Isak in quality.

The 23-year-old French striker has emerged as a key target for Arne Slot’s side, who are keen on adding firepower to their attack ahead of the new season. Reports suggest that Liverpool have entered advanced discussions with Frankfurt, with Ekitike himself reportedly open to a move to Anfield.

Liverpool were initially prepared to pay over £100 million for Isak, but Newcastle’s firm stance has forced a shift in strategy — one that could end up benefiting the Merseyside giants in the long term.

According to German football insider Johannes Wolf, Ekitike’s potential is massive. Although he may not yet be on Isak’s level, his performance last season — particularly in the absence of Omar Marmoush — showed he has the qualities to lead the line for a top club.

“Ekitike isn’t at Isak’s level yet, but he has all the tools to get there, maybe even go beyond,” said Wolf. “In terms of physical profile, technical ability, and movement, the comparison is actually quite close.”

The Frenchman, who previously caught the eye during his time in Ligue 1, is now considered one of Europe’s most exciting young forwards. If signed, he would join Jeremie Frimpong and Florian Wirtz as Liverpool’s third Bundesliga acquisition this summer.

“He’s ready for the Premier League,” Wolf added. “He’ll need time to adapt, but he’s shown that he can rise to big occasions. He’s not a goal machine like Haaland, but he links up play brilliantly, creates chances for teammates, and has a natural eye for goal.”

Frankfurt are said to value Ekitike at around €100 million, a figure that reflects his potential and growing reputation. Liverpool may have missed out on Isak, but if Ekitike fulfills the hype, this twist in their transfer plans could prove to be a major win.
