Cristiano Ronaldo made the difficult decision to skip Diogo Jota’s funeral today — not out of indifference, but to avoid becoming a distraction during the solemn event.

Jota, the former Liverpool and Portugal forward, tragically lost his life in a car crash earlier this week, alongside his brother Andre. The funeral was held in Gondomar, a quiet town in Portugal where the brothers were laid to rest.

According to The Mirror, Ronaldo was concerned that his appearance could shift attention away from the grieving family. With his global fame, the Al Nassr star feared his presence might draw excessive media coverage and large crowds that could overwhelm the intimate ceremony.

Though absent in person, Ronaldo still honored Jota with a heartfelt tribute on social media. Reflecting on their recent time together in the national squad — and Jota’s recent marriage — Ronaldo shared his grief, writing:

> “This doesn’t make sense. We were just together with the national team, and you had just gotten married.
To your wife, your children, and your family, I send my deepest condolences and wish them strength in this difficult moment.
You’ll always be remembered. Rest in peace, Diogo and Andre.”

Meanwhile, several of Jota’s Liverpool teammates, including Virgil van Dijk, Curtis Jones, and Andrew Robertson, attended the service, alongside former club captain Jordan Henderson. The emotional ceremony marked a painful moment for the football world and especially for Liverpool fans who cheered him on week after week.
