After the final whistle, manager Arne Slot didn’t hide his frustration, calling the match “one of the worst defeats” of his Liverpool tenure. He admitted his team “failed to do the basics” and struggled in duels and second balls — something Brentford punished mercilessly.
But it was captain Virgil van Dijk’s post-match words that truly resonated with the fanbase. Speaking to TNT Sports, the Dutch defender gave an emotional and brutally honest assessment of Liverpool’s current struggles.
> “It’s tough to explain,” he said. “We haven’t kept a clean sheet in nine games. It’s not just about one player or one mistake — it’s collective. Everyone, including myself, needs to look in the mirror.”
Van Dijk also urged supporters to stay united during this difficult period:
> “We need each other. The same people who celebrated with us last year — we need them now even more. I know we’ll come through this because the quality is there, but we have to fight together.”
Despite the frustration, the captain remains confident that Liverpool will bounce back — but only if belief, hard work, and unity return to the dressing room.
