The Scotland captain came close to joining Atletico Madrid last summer, but the move never materialized, and he remained on Merseyside. Despite continued speculation, the La Liga club’s stance is now clearer.
Robertson Staying Put — For Now
According to reports from Football Insider, journalist Pete O’Rourke has confirmed that Atletico Madrid are not planning a January approach for Robertson. Having already signed Matteo Ruggeri from Atalanta and with Javi Galán also in their ranks, the Spanish side feels well covered at left-back.
“I don’t see Atletico returning for Robertson in January,” O’Rourke explained. “They already have Ruggeri and Galán competing for that role. While Robertson is an experienced option, it doesn’t look like a priority for them in the next window.”
That said, the situation could shift in the months ahead. If Robertson does not extend his deal with Liverpool, he will be free to negotiate with foreign clubs in January, potentially setting up a summer exit on a free transfer.
What It Means for Liverpool
Although Robertson is no longer the guaranteed first-choice left-back at Anfield, Liverpool still view him as a valuable squad member. His experience and leadership remain important, and for now, the Reds have no intention of letting him leave mid-season.
Looking further ahead, if Robertson does depart in 2026, Milos Kerkez is seen as the long-term option to take over the role. Kostas Tsimikas, who could return to the fold, may also be considered as part of Liverpool’s left-back plans.
For the time being, Robertson’s Anfield stay is secure — but the summer of 2026 could mark a turning point in his career.
