Newcastle United are on the verge of securing Brentford forward Yoane Wissa in a deal believed to be worth around £35 million, according to Sky Sports. The 28-year-old DR Congo international has given the green light to a summer move to St James’ Park, with his representatives already travelling to the UK to iron out the final details.
Eddie Howe turned his attention to Wissa after missing out on Benjamin Sesko, who joined Manchester United. While the Magpies are also monitoring Nicolas Jackson (Chelsea) and Lois Openda (RB Leipzig), Wissa now looks set to be the marquee attacking arrival.
Last season, Wissa was among the Premier League’s most lethal finishers, netting 19 goals without a single penalty – putting him level with Erling Haaland and Alexander Isak, and just one shy of Mo Salah when excluding spot-kicks. Versatile across the frontline, he can lead the attack or operate on either wing, offering Howe a flexible weapon in the final third.
While Sesko may have been the younger, flashier option, Wissa’s proven Premier League numbers suggest Newcastle are getting a ready-made goal threat. And here’s where it gets interesting – his arrival could pave the way for Liverpool’s long-rumoured pursuit of Alexander Isak to finally gain momentum.
