Liverpool’s shocking 3–0 defeat at Anfield to Nottingham Forest has drawn strong words from former Manchester United star Wayne Rooney, who believes the Reds are dangerously close to repeating the same decline that struck his former club.
Under Arne Slot, Liverpool have now fallen to eight defeats in their last eleven matches, with performances fluctuating from shaky to outright worrying since the campaign began.
Rooney, speaking to BBC Sport, stressed that Liverpool’s senior figures must step up immediately to stop the situation from spiraling further.
According to him, Liverpool’s problems were visible even during their early-season wins, with the team struggling to find rhythm or control. He warned that without strong leadership inside the dressing room, the club could easily “slide down the table,” just as Manchester United have done in recent years.
Rooney added that teams facing difficult periods often rely on solid shape and defensive discipline — two things Liverpool currently lack, as opponents have found them far too open and easy to break down.
Following the defeat, Virgil van Dijk didn’t hide his frustration, calling the team’s recent performances “unacceptable” and urging players to take responsibility for the dramatic downturn.
