Liverpool’s perfect run in the Premier League hit a stumbling block at Selhurst Park, and Wayne Rooney believes the Reds were missing one key man more than anyone realized — Hugo Ekitike.
The French forward, who was serving a suspension after his controversial red card against Southampton, played no part in the 2-1 defeat to Crystal Palace. While Alexander Isak was tasked with leading the line, the former Newcastle striker struggled to convert opportunities.
On The Wayne Rooney Show (via BBC Sport), the Manchester United legend made his stance clear:
> “Ekitike’s sending off against Southampton is a bigger loss than people think. He’s a superstar who can influence Liverpool in so many different ways. Of course, they’ve got Isak, but losing Ekitike was massive.”
Rooney’s words highlight just how quickly the 23-year-old has become central to Arne Slot’s plans. Liverpool invested heavily this summer in Isak and Florian Wirtz, yet it’s Ekitike who is emerging as the game-changer.
What This Means for the Title Race 🏆
The defeat at Selhurst Park narrowed Liverpool’s lead at the top of the table to just two points after Arsenal’s dramatic late win against Newcastle. With crucial fixtures against Galatasaray in the Champions League and Chelsea in the league coming up, Slot’s men cannot afford another slip.
Palace, meanwhile, were outstanding. Eddie Nketiah’s stoppage-time strike sealed the win after Federico Chiesa had briefly levelled the score. Liverpool had their chances — Wirtz was denied from close range and Isak fired wide — but in the end, frustration reigned.
Rooney’s assessment may sting, but it reflects the growing belief in Ekitike’s importance. For Liverpool to stay in control of the title race, the Frenchman’s swift return to top form — alongside stronger contributions from his teammates — could prove decisive.
