Former Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand has openly criticised Liverpool’s summer decision to part ways with Luis Diaz — claiming the club made a huge mistake letting the Colombian go.
Diaz completed a high-profile move to Bayern Munich for around £65.5 million, and the 28-year-old has already hit the ground running — scoring the winner on his debut against VfB Stuttgart and netting seven goals with four assists in 13 matches for the German champions.
Meanwhile, Liverpool’s form has been concerning. Despite spending nearly £450 million during the summer, Arne Slot’s side has stumbled to seventh place in the Premier League, losing four consecutive matches — a shocking decline for the defending champions.
Speaking on his “Rio Ferdinand Presents” podcast, Ferdinand didn’t mince words:
> “Diaz leaving… I don’t think that’s good business. He’s a top player. Have they replaced him with anything better? Is Gakpo better? No chance.”
Last season, both Diaz and Gakpo were instrumental in Liverpool’s title-winning campaign — each contributing nearly identical stats. Gakpo ended with 18 goals and six assists, while Diaz registered 17 goals and five assists. Yet, despite their shared success, Diaz’s desire to leave eventually forced Liverpool’s hand.
Reports suggest that the Colombian pushed for a transfer after contract talks broke down, having previously been denied a move to Manchester City in 2024. Bayern Munich then swooped in — and judging by his electric start, Diaz seems to be thriving in Germany, while Liverpool continue to search for balance in Arne Slot’s evolving system.
Ferdinand concluded that the Reds’ decision may have disrupted their attacking chemistry, warning that “the new players have unbalanced the team.”
