Liverpool could be preparing for a defensive shake-up next season, with Ibrahima Konaté’s future at Anfield still uncertain. The French centre-back is out of contract in the summer of 2026 and, as things stand, has not agreed to extend his deal. Reports suggest Real Madrid are keeping close tabs on him, raising the possibility of a move to La Liga.
In anticipation of a possible departure, Liverpool are already exploring replacements — and Crystal Palace star Marc Guehi appears to be at the top of their list.
The 25-year-old England international was strongly linked with a move to Merseyside during the last transfer window, and speculation is building that the Reds could revive their interest either in January or next summer. Palace may still demand a significant fee, but with Guehi’s contract also running down until 2026, the Eagles risk losing him for free if no agreement is reached.
Football insider Pete O’Rourke has suggested that Guehi is “the favourite to come into Anfield as a new defender,” though a summer move on a free transfer looks more realistic unless Palace lower their demands in January.
Guehi is also admired outside of England, with Real Madrid among the clubs monitoring his situation. However, Liverpool’s need for a composed, ball-playing defender could give them the edge. Known for his calmness on the ball and strong positioning, Guehi fits the profile of centre-back Arne Slot wants to build his backline around.
Should Konaté move on, bringing in Guehi would provide Liverpool with a proven Premier League defender entering his prime years — and potentially on a free transfer, making it a smart piece of business.
