Report: Italian Giants Eye Move for Liverpool Veteran as Exit Door Remains Open
Liverpool could once again face pressure to part ways with one of their longest-serving players when the January transfer window arrives.
Joe Gomez, now in his 11th season at Anfield, was strongly linked with a departure during the summer after several key names from Arne Slot’s title-winning side moved on. Despite heavy speculation, the defender stayed put—though that may not last much longer.
Reports in Italy suggest AC Milan are preparing to revive their pursuit of the 28-year-old, having narrowly missed out on securing him for around €15m (£13m) at the end of the last window. Sources indicate that Gomez is considering his future due to limited opportunities under Slot, with Milan ready to test Liverpool’s resolve once again.
Insiders believe Liverpool would prefer to keep Gomez, but the club are said to be open to serious offers if the right deal presents itself. Alongside Milan, Tottenham and Crystal Palace remain potential suitors, with the latter previously discussing Gomez in talks over Marc Guehi.
The Reds, however, are hardly in a position to weaken their backline. A collapsed move for Guehi, a season-ending ACL injury for Giovanni Leoni, and uncertainty surrounding Ibrahima Konate’s contract have left the champions short on defensive depth.
While Gomez might feel it’s time for a new challenge after more than a decade on Merseyside—especially having played just over 1,000 minutes since Slot took charge—Liverpool’s recruitment team must weigh the risks carefully. Even with links to high-profile replacements such as Ronald Araújo, letting Gomez leave mid-season without cover could be costly.
