Speculation over Ibrahima Konate’s future has been swirling for months, but the French defender has made his stance clear — he’s not leaving Liverpool, at least not yet.
The 26-year-old centre-back, who has less than a year remaining on his contract, has repeatedly been linked with Real Madrid amid stalled talks over a new deal. Reports last month suggested no progress had been made in negotiations, sparking concerns that he could walk away for free next summer.
Now, according to Spanish sources, an unnamed Saudi Pro League club tested Liverpool’s resolve with a huge €60m (£52m) bid. It’s believed the Anfield hierarchy were open to discussions, but Konate himself rejected the move, choosing instead to continue his journey with the Reds.
Had he accepted, the timing would have been disastrous for Arne Slot’s side, with the transfer window closing and Liverpool still scrambling to secure Marc Guehi from Crystal Palace. Losing one of their senior centre-halves so late in the window could have left the squad exposed.
Fortunately for Liverpool, Konate looks committed to the campaign ahead. He underlined that with a commanding performance in Sunday’s hard-fought win over Arsenal, silencing recent critics of his form.
The question of his long-term future remains unresolved, but for now, the Frenchman’s decision to stay is a massive boost for the reigning Premier League champions. Whether the club can tie him down beyond this season will be the next big test.
