So far, all top-flight matches up to Christmas have been finalized, but the calendar for the crucial December–January period remains a mystery. Despite earlier expectations that the full schedule would be released by October 15, clubs and fans alike are still in the dark.
According to The Guardian, this year could see only one Premier League match take place on Boxing Day — a stunning break from tradition. Historically, December 26 has been one of the busiest and most beloved days on the English football calendar. However, with tight broadcasting commitments requiring 33 weekends of fixtures, the league reportedly has little flexibility to spread games across multiple days.
The situation is further complicated by the proximity of the next midweek round, which limits how far matches can be pushed back or rearranged.
For Liverpool fans, the Reds’ last two games of 2025 are both scheduled at Anfield — against Wolves on December 27 and Leeds on December 30 — though those dates could still shift. Interestingly, Liverpool have played on Boxing Day for three straight seasons, but this year there’s said to be only a 10% chance they’ll feature on that date.
While some may welcome a rare rest day after Christmas, others are frustrated by the loss of yet another long-standing football tradition — and by the ongoing delay in TV broadcast confirmations for late December and January.
