That pattern continued at Turf Moor, where Burnley’s 10 men stood firm until Hannibal Mejbri’s reckless handball gifted Salah a 95th-minute penalty. Despite Jeremie Frimpong appearing to encroach into the box, the Egyptian converted, sealing another hard-fought win for Arne Slot’s side.
While Frimpong’s infringement went largely unnoticed until after full-time, attention was firmly on Kerkez. The young left-back endured a torrid evening, receiving a yellow card for diving before being substituted just 38 minutes into the contest. Reports have since suggested that Slot is now considering a rotation system between Robertson and Kerkez for the remainder of the campaign.
Robertson, meanwhile, delivered his usual all-action display and played a key role in Liverpool’s resilience. At full-time, Salah posted a photo of his embrace with the Scot on Instagram, which quickly drew likes from both Robertson and Kerkez, highlighting the contrasting fortunes of the pair on the night.
Liverpool signed Kerkez from Bournemouth in a £40 million summer deal, with the 21-year-old earmarked as Robertson’s long-term successor. However, the Hungarian still has plenty of development ahead of him before cementing a regular place.
Off the pitch, Liverpool are also weighing up their future attacking options. With Salah under contract until 2027, the club has identified Bayern Munich’s Michael Olise as a possible heir, with a £100m move under consideration. Should the deal materialize, Liverpool may seek to overlap Olise’s arrival with Salah’s tenure—just as they now balance Robertson’s experience with Kerkez’s potential on the opposite flank.
