Liverpool’s relentless push to land Newcastle United’s star striker Alexander Isak has left more questions than answers, with one football insider branding the club’s approach “messy” and confusing.

The 25-year-old forward, who has made it clear he wants to swap Tyneside for Anfield, has become the Reds’ top target in the final stretch of the transfer window. But despite submitting a £110 million offer with potential add-ons, Newcastle have stood firm, demanding closer to £150 million before even considering a deal.

Reports earlier this month suggested the Magpies would only sanction his departure if a suitable replacement could be secured. Until then, Eddie Howe’s side are refusing to budge.

Isak’s frustration is also beginning to boil over. The Sweden international was left out of Newcastle’s squad for their 0-0 draw with Aston Villa on August 16, reportedly after refusing to make himself available for selection. Days later, he released a statement accusing the club of breaking promises and losing his trust — a revelation that stunned many supporters.

Former Everton and Aston Villa chief Keith Wyness has now weighed in, questioning Liverpool’s handling of negotiations. Speaking on Football Insider’s podcast, he said:

> “Liverpool haven’t exactly covered themselves in glory here. They clearly had a valuation in mind, but it doesn’t look like they communicated that properly with his representatives. If their maximum bid was always going to be at this level, what did they expect to happen?”



Wyness went on to suggest that the striker may soon face an awkward reality check:

> “Either Liverpool meet Newcastle’s demands, or Isak may have to swallow his pride and play on at St James’ Park. It’s a shame, because he’s an outstanding talent — still young, exciting, and usually well-conducted. This situation has turned into a bit of a mess.”



Isak, who joined Newcastle in 2022 from Real Sociedad for £63 million on a six-year contract, is tied down until 2028, giving the club little pressure to sell.

Meanwhile, on the outgoing side at Anfield, reports indicate that Liverpool are preparing to offload Kostas Tsimikas before the deadline. The Greek defender, now 29, has slipped down the pecking order following the arrival of Milos Kerkez, who is expected to compete with Andy Robertson for the left-back role.

Tsimikas’ omission from both the Community Shield and the opening-day Premier League win against Bournemouth is seen as a clear signal that his time at the club may be coming to an end.
