It seems the Reds and the Magpies are gearing up for another dramatic transfer standoff — and this one could get even more intense than last summer’s near-swap that shook the Premier League.
Inside sources suggest Liverpool still have their eyes firmly set on Newcastle striker Alexander Isak, while the Magpies remain interested in Liverpool’s Harvey Elliott, who’s reportedly open to a move away from Anfield. Bundesliga side RB Leipzig are also monitoring the situation closely.
Last summer, a mega deal involving Joe Gomez and Anthony Gordon almost crossed the finish line. The idea was to swap the two England internationals in a package worth around £45 million, but it ultimately collapsed when Liverpool refused to include rising star Jarell Quansah.
At the time, Newcastle were under pressure to generate funds. They offloaded Elliot Anderson to Nottingham Forest for £35m and sold Yankuba Minteh to Brighton for £33m. Those sales gave the club breathing room — enough to halt Gordon’s return to Merseyside, even though he was very close to rejoining his boyhood club.

Despite the failed move, Gordon — who once trained at Liverpool’s academy before joining Everton — is still seen as a long-term target at Anfield. He’s close friends with Curtis Jones, and they both came through the Kirkby academy ranks.
In October, Gordon renewed his contract with Newcastle, but speculation ramped up again this June. talkSPORT’s Alex Crook recently hinted that Liverpool might reignite their interest, calling Gordon “the one deal I’ve always kept in my back pocket.”
As for Isak, it’s clear Liverpool are big admirers, but Newcastle are unlikely to entertain offers unless the fee is astronomical.
🚨 Meanwhile, Liverpool have already begun clearing space in their squad and on their wage bill — Trent Alexander-Arnold, Caoimhin Kelleher, and Jarell Quansah have all departed, and Elliott could be next.
Across the divide, Newcastle have had a slow window so far and recently missed out on Joao Pedro, who was snapped up by Chelsea at the last moment.
