Liverpool have officially tied down promising midfielder James McConnell to a fresh five-year contract, while also approving a loan move that will see him spend the rest of the season with Dutch heavyweights Ajax.
The 20-year-old, who first featured for the Reds’ senior team in a Europa League clash against Toulouse back in November 2023, is set to reunite with Johnny Heitinga — the former Everton defender who recently took charge at the Amsterdam club after leaving his role on Arne Slot’s backroom staff.
Interestingly, McConnell won’t be the only Liverpool player in Amsterdam this year. Goalkeeper Vitezslav Jaros made the switch earlier this summer, and now the midfield prospect will follow the same path.
Born in Morpeth, McConnell has already enjoyed some standout moments at Anfield, including being part of the squad that lifted the Carabao Cup against Chelsea during Jurgen Klopp’s farewell season. Despite Klopp once describing him as “a joy to watch,” the youngster managed just four senior appearances under Slot across all competitions last term, bringing his total for the Reds to 13.
A spell in the Eredivisie — and potentially the Champions League — is expected to accelerate his growth and give him the valuable minutes he needs at the top level.
