Arne Slot’s side, who have now suffered four straight defeats across all competitions, endured a frustrating afternoon at Anfield — and things might get even worse off the pitch.
The controversy stems from multiple moments late in the game when Liverpool’s ball attendants were seen throwing balls directly to the players in an attempt to quicken play. According to the Premier League rules introduced in 2022, while several balls are placed around the pitch on designated stands, they must only be retrieved by players themselves — ball boys and girls are not permitted to hand them over.
Eyewitnesses also reported that Slot himself tossed the ball to one of his players during the frantic final minutes as Liverpool pushed for an equaliser. This, too, falls under the rule’s restrictions.
Although similar violations have led to heavy fines in the past — such as Aston Villa’s £125,000 penalty earlier this year — sources suggest Liverpool are unlikely to face financial punishment. Instead, the league is expected to issue a formal reminder about the regulations.
Interestingly, Manchester United reportedly did not file a complaint despite noticing the incidents. However, the matter has still caught the Premier League’s attention.
Liverpool’s next test comes midweek in the Champions League against Eintracht Frankfurt before a string of crucial fixtures, including clashes with Brentford, Crystal Palace, Aston Villa, and Real Madrid.
With tensions already high after a disappointing run of form, this latest development adds further pressure on Arne Slot and his team as they look to turn things around both on and off the pitch.
