Quietly, without much attention at the time, midfielder Tyler Morton left Liverpool in the summer for Lyon. Now, reports claim Crystal Palace are considering Morton as a potential successor to Adam Wharton—ironically the same Wharton Liverpool are reportedly scouting as a major future signing.
If Palace see Morton and Wharton as similar profiles, why didn’t Liverpool give their academy graduate a proper chance?
Morton’s Anfield record paints the picture: just 14 senior appearances and only five under Slot. He was clearly behind the likes of Ryan Gravenberch, Dominik Szoboszlai, Alexis Mac Allister, Curtis Jones and Wataru Endo, leaving him with only 263 minutes of football last season.
His move to France has already changed everything. Morton has featured 15 times for Lyon this campaign—nearly five times the minutes he played last year—and has produced standout performances, including a commanding display against Paris Saint-Germain.
A midfielder who thrives on technique, composure, and intelligent positional play seems like someone Liverpool could use right now. So will Slot treat Wharton differently?
Probably—because Wharton would cost around £100 million. He’s widely expected to be part of England’s 2026 World Cup plans, and his rise has been nothing short of impressive. But it’s hard for fans to overlook the contradiction: why let Morton go, only to chase a costly player of similar style?
Supporters Voice Frustration Over Morton Exit
As rumours linking Liverpool to Wharton circulate, supporters have not held back their irritation. One fan bluntly said they’d rather bring Morton back than spend an eye-watering fee on Wharton.
Another supporter pointed fingers at Slot, claiming his decisions are pushing young talents out of the club too easily. Some questioned why Endo was preferred over Morton, while others still cite Díaz’s sale as another baffling call.
