Harvey Elliott has captured attention once again—this time not on the pitch for Liverpool, but as he prepares for a fresh chapter at Aston Villa.
The 22-year-old midfielder, who found minutes hard to come by at Anfield last season, sealed a deadline-day switch to Villa Park in search of more consistent opportunities. After weeks of speculation linking him with the likes of Newcastle, Tottenham, Fulham, and Brighton, it was Unai Emery’s side who ultimately won the race, agreeing to a season-long loan that includes a £35 million obligation to buy.
Elliott, who lifted multiple trophies with Liverpool but often played a supporting role since joining from Fulham in 2019, is now determined to establish himself as a regular starter.
On Thursday evening (11 September), he took to Instagram to share a heartfelt update for Villa fans ahead of his possible debut against Everton this weekend. His message—“Working towards the weekend. Looking forward to seeing you soon, Villans!”—quickly sparked reactions from both former and new teammates.
Curtis Jones, Alexis Mac Allister, Cody Gakpo, Rio Ngumoha, and Wataru Endo were among the Liverpool stars who showed their support with likes, while new Villa colleague Morgan Rogers hyped him up with: “We readyyyyy.” Meanwhile, ex-Red Tyler Morton, now at Lyon, joked about Elliott’s new No. 9 shirt, commenting: “Numberrrrr 9.”
Despite Liverpool being his boyhood dream, Elliott had grown increasingly frustrated by limited game time. Earlier this year, reports suggested he still wanted to stay and fight for his place, but the club’s summer recruitment in attacking positions left him with little room to shine.
In 149 appearances for Liverpool, Elliott registered 15 goals and 20 assists. Now, with Villa competing in the Europa League and in need of depth, the move looks like a perfect fit. The England U21 star will hope regular football in the Premier League not only boosts his career but also strengthens his case for a senior England call-up.
