The future of French striker Hugo Ekitike is becoming one of the most talked-about stories of this transfer window — and now, a major development has surfaced.
According to fresh reports, Ekitike has privately indicated where he’d rather play next season, with both Liverpool and Newcastle locked in a high-stakes race to land the 23-year-old Eintracht Frankfurt star.
Ekitike, who once played for PSG, was a standout performer in the Bundesliga last season, notching 22 goals and 13 assists, helping Frankfurt secure a Champions League spot. With interest growing rapidly across Europe, it’s no surprise that Manchester United have also been keeping tabs since May.
While Liverpool have recently rekindled talks with Frankfurt in the past 48 hours, it’s believed their priority remains Alexander Isak — though Ekitike is reportedly next in line if a deal for the Newcastle forward doesn’t materialize.
Over at St James’ Park, Newcastle are still determined to land Ekitike, even after a £70 million bid was rejected earlier this week. Frankfurt are said to be holding out for a figure closer to £85–100 million, especially after big-money sales of Randal Kolo Muani and Omar Marmoush.
In a recent update, respected journalist Jan Aage Fjortoft told ESPN FC that while Frankfurt aren’t actively looking to sell, Ekitike would favour a move to Anfield over other destinations.
“Liverpool may turn to him if the Isak deal doesn’t go through,” Fjortoft explained. “But the player himself is calm. He knows he can play Champions League football with Frankfurt if he stays, and the club is under no pressure to sell.”
However, insiders say Liverpool are prepared to outbid Newcastle if they push forward, with club-to-club negotiations progressing, according to Fabrizio Romano. It’s shaping up to be a fierce battle — and Ekitike seems to already know which shirt he wants to wear next.
