Arne Slot’s remarkable title-winning debut season now feels like a distant memory, with Liverpool’s campaign slipping into dangerous territory after a string of damaging results.
The Reds have already surpassed last season’s total number of Premier League defeats, and their recent collapse has been felt across all competitions. A heavy 4–1 defeat to PSV at Anfield in the Champions League has intensified questions from supporters about whether the Dutchman can turn things around.
Liverpool currently sit 12th in the table, and their recent scorelines paint an even darker picture. They’ve fallen 3–0 to Manchester City, 3–0 to Nottingham Forest, and suffered that 4–1 home loss to PSV — three consecutive games decided by a margin of three goals or more. In total, they have lost five of their last seven matches, a run far below the expectations set after last season’s title triumph.
The decline began in late September with a 2–1 loss to Crystal Palace, followed by further setbacks against Galatasaray and Chelsea, sparking concerns that have only intensified as the season progresses. With Arsenal already 11 points ahead, Liverpool find themselves drifting further away from contention before December even arrives.
Who Could Replace Slot? Bookmakers React
As doubt grows around Slot’s position, bookmakers have moved quickly to adjust the odds on who could take over if Liverpool decide a change is needed.
Jürgen Klopp, Slot’s predecessor and club icon, initially emerged as an early favourite at 4/1 and has now shortened to 3/1.
However, Xabi Alonso has overtaken him as the leading candidate. The Real Madrid manager — a beloved figure at Anfield — is currently priced at 5/2. His appointment would require navigating a contract he only signed in May, likely making any move costly.
Oliver Glasner, impressing with Crystal Palace and already a manager who has beaten Liverpool this season, is also among the names in the conversation. He stands at 8/1 to make the switch.
As Liverpool continue to falter, the speculation surrounding Slot’s future — and the identity of a possible successor — is only expected to intensify.
