Liverpool could be considering a highly unexpected transfer strategy involving defender Ibrahima Konaté as the January 2026 window progresses. With Konaté’s contract set to expire in the summer and no extension agreement yet in place, speculation over his future has ramped up — and some pundits believe the Reds might explore a swap deal rather than a straight sale.
The idea gaining traction suggests that ex-Liverpool striker Stan Collymore has publicly encouraged the club to look at an exchange move with Aston Villa’s Ezri Konsa — sending Konaté to Villa while bringing Konsa to Anfield. According to Collymore, this kind of trade could solve several problems at once: it would give Liverpool a ready-made defensive reinforcement while avoiding the risk of losing Konaté for nothing if he walks away as a free agent in June.
Collymore’s suggestion stems from Konaté’s inconsistent form this season and the uncertainty surrounding his long-term future at the club. In contrast, Konsa has impressed with his defensive reliability and tactical awareness, making him an enticing target for the Reds.
At this stage, there are no confirmed talks between Liverpool and Villa over such a swap, and the idea remains speculative — driven mainly by pundit commentary rather than club sources.
