Liverpool’s long-standing interest in Dayot Upamecano could soon take a decisive turn, with Bayern Munich reportedly forcing the issue over the defender’s future.

The French centre-back is entering a crucial phase of his career in Germany, with his Bayern contract moving into its final 12 months. As uncertainty lingers, Bundesliga champions Bayern are said to have drawn a clear line under prolonged negotiations.

According to respected German journalist Christian Falk, the Bavarian club has now informed Upamecano that a decision must be made swiftly. Bayern’s leadership, growing frustrated with the lack of progress, are keen to avoid another drawn-out contract saga.

Writing in his CF Bayern Insider column, Falk revealed that Bayern have given the defender a strict deadline, leaving him with just 48 hours to decide whether he wants to extend his stay or consider alternative options elsewhere.

The ultimatum is understood to expire this weekend, with Bayern eager for clarity despite Upamecano remaining a regular figure under new head coach Vincent Kompany. While the club values the 26-year-old, they are unwilling to allow talks to drag on indefinitely.

This development has placed several elite European clubs on alert — Liverpool among them. The Reds have been tracking Upamecano’s situation closely, particularly as their own defensive contract concerns continue to grow.

Ibrahima Konaté, another key Liverpool centre-back, is also approaching the final stretch of his deal, which is due to expire in the summer of 2026. Falk has previously pointed out the similarities between the situations at Anfield and the Allianz Arena, with both clubs at risk of losing important defenders for nothing if agreements are not reached in time.

Bayern, meanwhile, have reportedly been attempting to secure Upamecano’s future for close to a year. With the clock ticking and the possibility of a free transfer next summer looming, the defender’s appeal to Europe’s biggest clubs has only increased.

From Liverpool’s perspective, reinforcing the centre of defence is becoming increasingly urgent. A previous attempt to sign Marc Guéhi fell through after Crystal Palace blocked the move, before the England international completed a January switch to Manchester City.
