Liverpool’s long-running interest in Dayot Upamecano could soon gain fresh momentum, with the Bayern Munich defender now facing a crucial decision over his future in Germany.

The French centre-back is approaching a pivotal stage in his Bayern career as he enters the final year of his contract. With no agreement yet in place, uncertainty continues to grow — and it’s a situation several elite clubs are watching closely.

According to respected German journalist Christian Falk, Bayern Munich have now taken a firm stance. The Bundesliga champions are keen to avoid prolonged negotiations and have reportedly issued Upamecano with a strict deadline to clarify his intentions.

Writing in his CF Bayern Insider column, Falk explained that Bayern’s leadership is becoming increasingly frustrated by the lack of progress in contract talks. While Upamecano remains a key player under new head coach Vincent Kompany, the club wants a clear answer and is unwilling to let discussions drag on indefinitely.

As a result, the defender has been given just 48 hours to decide whether he is prepared to sign a new deal or consider alternative options. The deadline is said to fall this weekend, leaving little time for hesitation.

This development has put Europe’s top clubs on alert, including Liverpool. Falk has previously named the Reds among those closely monitoring Upamecano’s situation, particularly due to their own defensive contract concerns.

Liverpool are facing a similar dilemma with Ibrahima Konaté, whose current deal expires in the summer of 2026. Without an extension, the club risks entering dangerous territory — a scenario Bayern are now trying to avoid with Upamecano.

Falk has previously pointed out the striking parallels between the two clubs, noting that both could lose key defenders on free transfers if no agreements are reached in time. Bayern have reportedly been working on a renewal for nearly a year, but with time running out, Upamecano’s value on the open market continues to rise.

From Liverpool’s point of view, defensive reinforcements are becoming increasingly urgent. A previous attempt to sign Marc Guéhi fell through after Crystal Palace blocked the move, with the England international later joining Manchester City in January. Add Virgil van Dijk’s advancing age and Konaté’s uncertain future, and the need for fresh options becomes clear.
