Liverpool FC Women have officially appointed Gareth Taylor as their new head coach, ending a six-month search for a permanent replacement for Matt Beard.
Taylor, 52, arrives with an impressive résumé, having led Manchester City Women for five years before departing in March. During his tenure, he secured both the Women’s FA Cup and League Cup, and narrowly missed out on the Women’s Super League crown in 2024—losing on goal difference.
The former Wales international, who earned 15 caps in an 18-year playing career, also spent time coaching in City’s men’s Academy before stepping into women’s football management in 2020.
At Liverpool, Taylor will be joined by familiar faces—Amber Whiteley stays on as assistant coach after serving in an interim role, while Chad Gribble, Taylor’s ex-assistant at City, will also form part of the backroom team.
Speaking on his appointment, Taylor said:
> “It’s an honour to take charge of a club with such history and ambition. We want to build a side that excites the fans, plays attractive football, and delivers success.”
His first outing will be a behind-closed-doors friendly against Aston Villa this Saturday at Bodymoor Heath, as the team gears up for their Women’s Super League opener against Everton at Anfield on September 7.
Liverpool FC Women’s managing director, Andy O’Boyle, praised the appointment:
> “Gareth stood out as the ideal candidate. His track record in creating strong, identity-driven teams and developing players is exceptional. This is a key step towards returning LFC Women to the top of the game.”
