Liverpool’s pursuit of a new striker has taken a major turn, and it’s sparked a storm of reactions online. Following intense links with Alexander Isak, who remains firmly off the market despite a mammoth bid, the Reds have now seemingly secured Hugo Ekitike from Eintracht Frankfurt — but it’s the price tag that has left fans speechless.
After Newcastle’s £70m attempt to land the 23-year-old forward was turned down earlier this summer, Liverpool wasted no time. According to renowned transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, the Merseyside club have reached an agreement that could see them pay up to €95 million (£82.5 million) for the Frenchman — making it one of the most talked-about deals of the window.
Ekitike, who notched 15 goals in 33 Bundesliga matches last season, is expected to sign a six-year contract that would keep him at Anfield until 2031. Despite interest from several Premier League rivals, including Manchester United and Newcastle, the player reportedly only had eyes for Liverpool.
Sky Sports reported a slightly different breakdown of the deal, suggesting an initial £69m fee with performance-related bonuses potentially taking the total close to £78m (€90m).
