Liverpool could be set to make a jaw-dropping move in the transfer market, with reports suggesting a potential swap involving Florian Wirtz and Real Madrid’s Vinicius Junior.
The German attacking midfielder joined Liverpool from Bayer Leverkusen over the summer for a reported £100 million, a signing that had been fiercely contested by both Real Madrid and Bayern Munich. Despite the hype, Wirtz has struggled to make an impact in the Premier League, failing to score or assist in his first 11 league appearances.
He has also missed the last two matches for Liverpool due to a muscle injury picked up while on international duty with Germany. While his statistics don’t fully reflect his contribution—he ranks 20th in the league for chances created—questions about his form have grown amid Liverpool’s recent struggles.
Interestingly, former Barcelona and Spain midfielder Gaizka Mendieta has weighed in, suggesting Liverpool could send Wirtz to Madrid in exchange for the Brazilian star Vinicius Junior, who reportedly remains unsettled at the Bernabéu.
Vinicius was the runner-up in the 2024 Ballon d’Or race but has yet to commit to a new deal with Real Madrid, reportedly due to tensions with manager Xabi Alonso. Ironically, Alonso has also been linked with a move to Liverpool if the club parts ways with Arne Slot.
Mendieta commented on Casinostugan: “A Wirtz-Vinicius swap? Why not? I can see Wirtz thriving at Real Madrid, and Vinicius could do well in the Premier League if given the right environment and trust. We’ve seen coaches bring players they know can succeed; Wirtz was a leader at Leverkusen, and this could be another example.”
The potential swap raises questions about positions and fit, particularly for Wirtz in a crowded Madrid midfield. For Liverpool, Vinicius could be a dynamic addition if the deal comes together, providing fresh energy to a side searching for consistent results.
