Liverpool may not be done with some of their recent departures just yet. Reports suggest that the Reds could look to re-sign Harvey Elliott as early as next summer — and he might not be the only one making a surprise return.
Elliott, who sealed a dramatic deadline-day move to Aston Villa, is currently on loan with a £35m purchase obligation at the end of the season. The 22-year-old slipped down the pecking order at Anfield following the arrival of Florian Wirtz, but Liverpool cleverly inserted a buy-back clause in the deal — keeping the door open for a reunion.
And here’s where it gets even more intriguing: according to former Everton CEO Keith Wyness, Liverpool also safeguarded a similar option for Ben Doak. The young winger joined Bournemouth permanently for £20m plus add-ons, but the Reds can trigger a clause to bring him back for a fixed fee.
Speaking on Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, Wyness hinted that both Elliott and Doak could realistically return:
> “Both players have very reasonable buy-back clauses. Elliott is still highly regarded at Anfield. The club just felt he wasn’t physically ready, but the talent and admiration are definitely there. Don’t be surprised if Liverpool move for him again.”
Wyness even revealed there was internal disagreement at Liverpool over Elliott’s exit, with some voices strongly against letting him go. That split opinion might make a comeback even more likely if the midfielder thrives at Villa.

While plotting potential returns, Liverpool are also bracing for disappointment elsewhere. Their late push to land Marc Guehi collapsed after Crystal Palace boss Oliver Glasner refused to sanction the deal without a replacement.
Now, the Reds face serious competition. Both Real Madrid and Juventus are circling, with sources suggesting they could pounce to sign the England defender — possibly even on a free transfer. Given both clubs’ history of snapping up top players without a fee, Liverpool risk watching another priority target slip through their fingers.
