Liverpool Women have strengthened their squad with the signing of Swiss forward Aurélie Csillag from German side SC Freiburg during the winter transfer window.
The club officially announced the arrival of the exciting winger on Monday, adding another attacking option to Gareth Taylor’s squad as they battle through a difficult season.
Csillag becomes the third new face to arrive at the club this month, following the additions of Anna Josendal from Hammarby and Martha Thomas, who joined on loan from Tottenham Hotspur.
It has been a challenging campaign for Liverpool Women so far. After 12 league matches, the team sits at the foot of the Women’s Super League table, having failed to register a single victory and collecting just four points.
Confirming the transfer on social media, Liverpool FC Women expressed their excitement over the deal, stating that the move is subject to final international clearance.
A Boost for Liverpool’s Struggling Attack
The hope at Anfield is that Csillag can provide a much-needed spark in front of goal.
Liverpool have found scoring particularly difficult this season, managing just eight goals in league competition – the second-lowest tally in the division. Only Leicester City have scored fewer, with seven goals, while West Ham United sit just above Liverpool with nine.
Given those numbers, it is clear why the club has moved quickly to bring in attacking reinforcements.
Statistical analysis suggests Csillag has the potential to make a real difference. Data from FBref highlights her impressive attacking output compared to other players in top European leagues. She ranks highly for expected goals, shots per game, progressive runs, and touches inside the opposition penalty area – all indicators of an active and dangerous forward.
Her Career So Far
The 22-year-old spent the first half of the current season with Freiburg, where she scored three goals and provided one assist in 13 Bundesliga appearances. That equates to a direct goal involvement roughly every two matches.
Before moving to Germany, Csillag enjoyed a productive spell in Switzerland with FC Basel, scoring 16 times in 49 appearances over three seasons. Including earlier performances with Grasshopper Club Zürich, she has now reached a total of 24 senior club goals in her career.
Versatility in Attack
One of the most encouraging aspects of the signing is Csillag’s flexibility. She is comfortable playing on either wing but is also capable of operating as a central striker.
That adaptability will be welcomed by manager Gareth Taylor, who is searching for solutions to revive Liverpool’s attacking threat and climb away from the bottom of the table.
With the second half of the season now underway, the club will be hoping their new recruit can quickly settle in and help turn their fortunes around.
