As Liverpool prepare to defend their Premier League crown and Real Madrid aim to bounce back under new leadership, a potential player swap between the two giants could address key issues for both clubs.
After clinching their 20th league title in Arne Slot’s debut season, Liverpool have been active in the transfer market this summer. New signings include Florian Wirtz and Jeremie Frimpong from Bayer Leverkusen, goalkeeper Freddie Woodman from Preston North End, and left-back Milos Kerkez from Bournemouth.
But the Anfield side isn’t done yet. According to a recent update from The Athletic’s David Ornstein, Liverpool have shown interest in Newcastle United striker Alexander Isak, although no formal offer has been made.
Meanwhile, in Spain, Real Madrid have undergone a managerial shift. With Carlo Ancelotti stepping aside, Xabi Alonso has taken charge at the Bernabeu. Los Blancos are also reshaping their squad, welcoming Trent Alexander-Arnold, Dean Huijsen, and ex-Man United full-back Alvaro Carreras.
Although Alexander-Arnold’s move to Madrid is already sealed, there’s now speculation that a swap deal involving Ibrahima Konaté and Rodrygo could be on the horizon.
On Monday, journalist Fabrizio Romano revealed that Real Madrid are keeping tabs on Konaté, possibly eyeing a free transfer in the summer of 2026 when his Liverpool contract expires. So far, no official bid has been tabled, but interest from the Spanish giants is real.
Konaté, 26, was instrumental in Liverpool’s title-winning campaign. On the other side, 24-year-old Rodrygo has been linked with several Premier League clubs in recent months, including Arsenal and Chelsea. After falling down the pecking order under Ancelotti, the Brazilian winger may be considering a fresh start.
Rodrygo’s current contract runs until 2028, giving Madrid the upper hand in any negotiations. Reports suggest he’s valued at around €100 million (£86.6m), which may lead the Spanish side to demand cash in addition to any potential swap.
