Liverpool centre-back Ibrahima Konate has publicly reacted after being heavily criticised by club legend Jamie Carragher, following the Reds’ painful 4-1 defeat to PSV in the Champions League on Tuesday night.
The defeat at Anfield marked yet another setback in what has become a disastrous stretch for Liverpool, who have now fallen to nine losses in their last 12 matches across all competitions.
The night began in chaos when Virgil van Dijk conceded an early penalty through an unusual handball incident, allowing Ivan Perisic to open the scoring for PSV. Liverpool’s midfield also came under fire after being repeatedly caught out during transition moments leading to the Dutch side’s additional goals.
However, Carragher’s anger was firmly focused on Konate, particularly over his defending in the build-up to PSV’s third goal. In a now-deleted TikTok clip from CBS Sports, the former Liverpool defender unleashed a furious outburst, saying:
> “I’ve had enough… that Konate situation, it’s a sackable offence for the manager to keep picking him.”
With criticism pouring in, Konate—whose current Liverpool contract runs out in the summer amid links to Real Madrid—took to Twitter to address the storm surrounding the team.
The French defender posted:
> “We have to stand firm during moments like this. Criticism is part of the game, and we’ll face it head-on.
The fans who stay with us through the highs and the lows mean everything. We know improvements are needed, and we’ll continue fighting for you.”
Carragher Adds Pressure on Arne Slot
Carragher didn’t reserve his frustration solely for the players. In his column for The Telegraph, he warned that manager Arne Slot has one week to turn things around.
Liverpool’s next three fixtures—West Ham (away), Sunderland (home), and Leeds (away)—will reportedly determine Slot’s fate. Carragher stressed that collecting fewer than seven points from these matches would put the club in an “untenable” position.
> “No matter how much goodwill Slot has, Liverpool cannot continue with the level of performances shown over the past three months,” he wrote.
Carragher Also Calls Out Slot’s Team Selection
In a separate CBS Sports segment, Carragher doubled down on his claims, accusing Slot of making a “sackable offence” by continuing to start Konate despite his recent struggles.
Liverpool’s ongoing slump—including a run of three straight defeats—has intensified pressure on Slot and raised concerns among supporters who believe the season is slipping away faster than anyone expected.
The Reds will try to stop the bleeding when they return to Premier League action against Crystal Palace this weekend.
