Liverpool’s bold summer move has been sealed — and it’s a record-breaker. Florian Wirtz, one of the most coveted young midfielders in Europe, has officially joined the Reds in a stunning £116 million transfer from Bayer Leverkusen.
Wirtz, 22, penned a five-year deal after Liverpool edged out European giants including Manchester City, Bayern Munich, and Real Madrid for his signature. The structure of the deal includes £100m paid up front and £16m in additional clauses — making it the largest transfer in British football history.
What’s perhaps more telling is the reaction from former manager Jurgen Klopp. Although no longer in the Anfield dugout, Klopp couldn’t hide his admiration for the move. Speaking to German media, the legendary boss said simply: “It will be really, really great. I’m sure of it.”
He continued: “Strengthening a title-winning side isn’t easy, but Liverpool have done it by landing an extraordinary talent like Wirtz.”
New manager Arne Slot, fresh off a Premier League-winning debut season, now has one of Europe’s brightest stars at his disposal.
Wirtz himself revealed what tipped the scales in Liverpool’s favour. “I felt this was the perfect step at the right time. Liverpool, to me, is one of the top three clubs in the world,” he said.
The German international emphasized that his decision was shaped by the vision shared during discussions with head coach Slot and sporting director Richard Hughes. “From the very first conversation, I felt like this is where I’m meant to be,” he added.
While the move wasn’t without tough choices — especially for a national team player based in Germany — Wirtz was ultimately swayed by Liverpool’s project, people, and promise.
As anticipation builds, all eyes will now be on when Wirtz makes his debut — and whether he can live up to the enormous expectations that come with such a hefty price tag.
