Jamie Carragher Warns Arne Slot: “Liverpool Need to Drop Struggling Summer Signing”
The Reds have endured a tough run of results, falling to consecutive defeats against Crystal Palace and Galatasaray, raising fresh doubts about the squad’s direction. Even during earlier wins, performances were far from convincing, with late goals and defensive lapses becoming a recurring theme.
Carragher believes much of the issue stems from new arrivals not settling quickly enough. In particular, the German midfielder Florian Wirtz has struggled to find form since arriving at Anfield.
> “I don’t feel like I’m watching a top team. Liverpool aren’t playing structured football right now—it’s end-to-end, almost like basketball. That’s not how elite teams operate,” Carragher explained on CBS Sports.
He added that while Liverpool’s recent signings were meant to add flair, they have instead upset the balance of the squad:
> “They haven’t really improved the attack, and defensively the team looks weaker compared to last season.”
Turning his focus to Wirtz, Carragher didn’t hold back:
> “At the moment, the team balance isn’t right and Wirtz stands out—he just isn’t up to speed. He’s a young player with a big future here, but right now I think he should be taken out of the lineup so Liverpool can regroup, restore defensive solidity, and then ease him back in.”
