Liverpool’s record-breaking summer arrival, Florian Wirtz, is still finding his rhythm in England — and one Premier League legend believes the midfielder didn’t expect the intensity that comes with playing in the world’s most demanding league.
According to Ian Wright, the young German playmaker has been caught off guard by the sheer pace and physical load of the Premier League since swapping Bayer Leverkusen for Merseyside. The move was a massive one at the time, breaking the British transfer fee record before teammate Alexander Isak later surpassed it.
A Challenging Beginning on Merseyside
Wirtz has endured a difficult opening chapter to his Liverpool career. Across eight competitive appearances, he’s yet to register his first goal and has only managed a single assist — during last month’s Community Shield.
Arne Slot’s decision to experiment with Wirtz on the left flank against Crystal Palace didn’t help matters, as the change was quickly abandoned at half-time after the 22-year-old struggled to make his presence felt.
The slow start has sparked criticism in some quarters, with even Wayne Rooney suggesting that Wirtz’s form has been “harmful” to the team. Wright, however, offered a more measured perspective.

Speaking on Premier League Productions, Wright explained:
Players arriving from the Bundesliga, no matter how talented, often underestimate the Premier League’s relentless tempo. Wirtz, he says, is no exception. Wright believes the midfielder is still adjusting to the higher demands — especially physically.
He emphasised that matches against clubs like Sunderland, Crystal Palace, or Leeds are never straightforward, and adapting to the league’s intensity requires developing both strength and stamina to cope with its weekly pressures.
Not Just Wirtz’s Problem
Wright isn’t the only one commenting on the situation. Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher has also pointed out that Wirtz’s struggles can’t be pinned solely on him — hinting that the team around him also has improvements to make.
What remains clear is that expectations remain high for the German international, and many believe once he settles, Liverpool will begin to see the creative spark they paid so heavily for.
