New Liverpool arrival Hugo Ekitike has shared insights into what influenced his decision to sign with the Reds in a deal worth £79 million—despite being chased by several top clubs across Europe, including Premier League rivals Newcastle United.

The French striker had a breakout season in the Bundesliga, netting 22 goals for Eintracht Frankfurt and catching the attention of multiple suitors. But in the end, it was a personal and compelling conversation with new Liverpool head coach Arne Slot that swayed the 22-year-old’s final decision.

🎙️ “We had a great first talk,” Ekitike said in his first official interview with the club. “It wasn’t just about football. He’s a genuine, approachable person, and I could sense right away that he believed in me. I felt I could grow under him.”

Slot reportedly explained how Ekitike would fit into his tactical setup during a detailed video call, laying out his vision and how the young striker could thrive at Anfield. The Dutch manager’s clarity and warmth made a lasting impression on the former PSG youth product.

🧠 Ekitike added, “He’s not only a great coach but a great person. That’s rare, and it played a big part in my decision.”

Liverpool acted quickly after Newcastle’s bid was turned down by Frankfurt, sealing the transfer and welcoming Ekitike to their squad for the club’s pre-season tour in Asia.

🔍 Interestingly, Slot used a similar approach to lure Florian Wirtz to Liverpool in a record-breaking £116.5m deal. According to Wirtz’s father, the new Liverpool boss impressed the German star by combining tactical intelligence with emotional intelligence—a formula that’s already working wonders.

Now settled into life with his new teammates, Ekitike is ready to hit the ground running and make his mark at Anfield under Slot’s guidance.
