Liverpool striker Hugo Ekitike will not face a club fine despite his unusual red card during the Carabao Cup victory over Southampton earlier this week.
The French forward, who had just netted the winning goal, was shown a second yellow after celebrating by removing his shirt — a costly mistake that sparked rumours of disciplinary action.
Some reports claimed the 22-year-old had been hit with a two-week wage penalty, but manager Arne Slot has dismissed those claims.
Speaking to the press, Slot explained that Ekitike immediately apologised to his teammates after the incident and stressed that Liverpool do not punish players for one-off mistakes.
> “It wasn’t the smartest thing to do and he realised it right away. He said sorry straight after,” Slot said. “At this club, you’re allowed to make mistakes without being hit with fines. He’s a young player, and even experienced ones slip up sometimes.”
Slot also praised the striker’s character, describing him as one of the warmest and most respectful individuals within the squad.
While the dismissal didn’t cost Liverpool in midweek, the Dutch coach admitted it could affect his options against Crystal Palace. However, he pointed out that Federico Chiesa’s form offers a timely alternative, with the Italian attacker now set for more opportunities in Ekitike’s absence.
