The 22-year-old left Anfield in September to join Aston Villa on loan after a summer filled with uncertainty about his future. Despite interest from multiple clubs, no permanent transfer was agreed, prompting Elliott to accept a short-term move in search of regular game time.
However, his time at Villa Park has not unfolded as planned. Under Unai Emery, Elliott has struggled for consistent minutes, with the Aston Villa boss yet to show signs of fully integrating him into his plans. This has also put the reported £35 million permanent option in doubt, as it is tied to appearance-related conditions that may not be met.
According to journalist Lewis Steele of the Daily Mail, the decision to leave Liverpool took a heavy emotional toll on Elliott. The midfielder, a lifelong Liverpool supporter, reportedly wrestled with the choice throughout the summer and found it extremely hard to walk away from the club where he grew up and developed.
Steele revealed that Elliott was visibly upset as he made the journey to Birmingham, deeply affected by the feeling that his Liverpool chapter had not worked out the way he had hoped.
Complicating matters further is a FIFA regulation that prevents players from representing more than two clubs in a single season. This means Elliott cannot secure another move during the January window, limiting his options to either staying at Aston Villa and pushing for a breakthrough, or returning to Liverpool at the end of the loan spell to compete for a place under Arne Slot.
