While Liverpool’s summer overhaul focused mainly on high-profile departures such as Luis Díaz and Darwin Núñez, another exit quietly flew under the radar. Teenage winger Ranel Young opted to leave Merseyside in July, turning down a fresh contract in favour of a move abroad with Serbian outfit Usce.
At the time, the switch appeared adventurous and ambitious. However, the gamble failed to pay off.
Overseas Move Fails to Ignite Career
The 19-year-old struggled to establish himself in Serbia, making just five appearances for the Stepojevac-based club before falling out of the matchday picture entirely. His last outing came in September, after which opportunities became increasingly limited.
With his development stalling, both the player and the club mutually agreed to end the contract. As a result, Young became a free agent less than half a year after leaving Liverpool.
Championship Switch Now on the Cards
That early exit has paved the way for a rapid return to England. According to reports, Young has now agreed personal terms with Bristol City, with the Championship side preparing to formalise the deal ahead of the January transfer window.
The winger has already been training with the Robins, and the move is expected to be confirmed imminently.
Once completed, Young will join Gerhard Struber’s squad as Bristol City push for a strong second half of the season. Currently sitting 11th in the table, the club is just four points off the play-off places and remains firmly in the promotion race.
A New Opportunity to Shine
Although Young never featured in a competitive first-team match for Liverpool, he was close to making his senior debut. He appeared on the bench for a Carabao Cup win over Brighton and was also named among the substitutes during Liverpool’s FA Cup loss to Plymouth Argyle last season.
Those selections underlined the club’s belief in his potential, even if a breakthrough never fully materialised.
During his time at Kirkby, Young built a reputation as a direct and explosive wide player, known for his speed, willingness to attack defenders, and ability to deliver dangerous crosses. Operating comfortably off the left flank, he frequently cut inside onto his stronger foot and showed flashes of creativity at youth level.
Fresh Start at Ashton Gate
Bristol City’s current squad offers competition in attack, but the lack of natural wide options could work in Young’s favour. With minutes potentially available, he now has a genuine chance to prove himself at Championship level.
After narrowly missing out in last season’s play-off semi-finals, the Robins remain ambitious and are targeting another promotion push — possibly with an eye on the Premier League in the near future.
For Ranel Young, this move represents a clean slate. Following a frustrating spell overseas, the focus now is on rebuilding confidence, finding rhythm, and turning early promise into real progress on English soil.
