With the January transfer window now open, Juventus are once again exploring the idea of bringing Federico Chiesa back to Turin. The Italian winger, who previously left Juve to join Liverpool in 2024, has struggled for regular minutes at Anfield under Arne Slot, prompting interest from his former club.
Chiesa’s career in England hasn’t gone as planned — despite Liverpool winning the Premier League, the 28-year-old has been largely used as a substitute and hasn’t been able to establish himself in the starting XI. This limited game time has fuelled speculation that he’d welcome a move back to Serie A where he could play more and rekindle his best form.
However, there’s a key obstacle in the way. Liverpool’s squad decisions this month — particularly regarding Mohamed Salah — may determine what happens next. The Egyptian international had a public dispute with the club earlier in the season but was later reconciled, and his future at Anfield remains unclear after the Africa Cup of Nations. If Salah stays beyond his comeback from the tournament, Liverpool will be reluctant to sanction Chiesa’s departure as they need depth in attack.
Negotiations between Juve and Liverpool are ongoing, with the Bianconeri keen on a deal that suits all parties. At the moment Liverpool reportedly prefer a permanent transfer, while Juve have considered flexible options, including a possible loan with conditions attached. But until Salah’s situation is resolved, Chiesa’s destination this month could stay in the balance.
