It was a disastrous evening for Arne Slot’s Liverpool, who were convincingly beaten 3–0 by Manchester City at the Etihad — a result that left fans furious and one player squarely in the firing line.
Erling Haaland broke the deadlock in the 29th minute after missing an earlier penalty against stand-in keeper Giorgi Mamardashvili. Liverpool briefly thought they’d levelled through Virgil van Dijk, but the goal was ruled out after VAR confirmed Andy Robertson was offside in the buildup.
The Premier League later clarified: “The referee’s on-field decision of offside and no goal was reviewed and confirmed by VAR, with Robertson in an offside position obstructing the goalkeeper.”
Before halftime, Nico González doubled City’s advantage, and Jeremy Doku sealed the result with a stunning strike in the second half — a night to forget for the Reds.
But amid the frustration, much of the anger from fans was directed at Ibrahima Konaté. The defender’s shaky display sparked widespread criticism online, especially amid growing speculation linking him with a free transfer to Real Madrid next summer.
One frustrated fan fumed:
> “Replace Konaté in January — he looks completely uninterested. His head’s already in Madrid.”
Another added:
> “He can’t pass, his decision-making is awful, and he’s nowhere near strong enough.”
A third joked:
> “Let’s start a fundraiser to get Konaté to Madrid in January — Gomez can manage till the end of the season!”
And a fourth went even harsher:
> “Once Konaté makes one mistake, ten more follow. He’s a total liability.”
Even so, some supporters saw the humour in it all, quipping:
> “If Madrid really take him for free, we’ve pulled off the heist of the century!”
