As tributes continue to pour in for Diogo Jota and his brother André, new details have emerged about Cristiano Ronaldo’s personal message to the grieving family, despite his notable absence from the funeral.
The tragic news broke on Thursday morning, confirming that Liverpool’s Diogo Jota and his brother lost their lives in a devastating crash along the A-52 dual carriageway in Zamora, Spain. Reports indicate their vehicle suffered a tyre blowout during an overtaking maneuver while en route to the UK.
In accordance with Portuguese tradition, the funeral was held Saturday in their hometown of Gondomar. Liverpool head coach Arne Slot and several members of the squad joined family and friends to pay their respects. Also in attendance were fellow Portuguese internationals including Bernardo Silva, Joao Cancelo, Diogo Dalot, and Ruben Neves.
However, Ronaldo, captain of the Portuguese national team, was not present. According to local media outlet Record, the legendary forward opted to remain with his family in Mallorca, fearing that his presence could unintentionally shift the focus and create a media frenzy during a time of mourning.
Though physically absent, Ronaldo did not remain silent. Prior to the service, he reportedly reached out to Jota’s wife, Rute Cardoso, offering heartfelt condolences and assuring her of his support. He is said to have promised to be there for her and their three children whenever needed.
Still, the decision sparked debate. Portuguese football analyst Luis Cristóvão criticized Ronaldo’s absence, calling it “inexplicable” and suggesting that no justification would fully make up for it.
Shortly after the accident became public, Ronaldo shared an emotional tribute on social media. He wrote:
> “None of this makes sense. We were just together with the national team… You had just gotten married. To your wife, your children, and your entire family, I send my deepest condolences. May you rest in peace, Diogo and André. You will never be forgotten.”
