Florian Wirtz’s highly anticipated move to Liverpool has yet to live up to expectations, with the German midfielder struggling to make an impact since his £116 million transfer from Bayer Leverkusen this summer.
After six Premier League appearances, the 22-year-old is still waiting for his first goal contribution in England’s top flight. It’s a stark contrast to his final season in Germany, where he registered 16 goals and 15 assists for Leverkusen.
Now, Liverpool legend Kenny Dalglish has shared his view on what Wirtz needs to do to adapt and thrive at Anfield. Speaking on the Stick To Football podcast, the former Reds striker and manager suggested that building chemistry with attacking teammates—particularly new signings—will be key.
> “He’s excellent at receiving the ball to feet and turning defenders both ways,” Dalglish explained. “Once he connects properly with those around him, especially the forwards, things will start to click.”
Dalglish compared the process to the instant understanding he developed with Ian Rush in the 1980s, highlighting that strong partnerships often start on the training ground.
The comments come just days after Jamie Carragher delivered a critical assessment of Wirtz’s early Liverpool career, arguing that the team has lost balance and identity since his arrival. Carragher suggested that the young midfielder might even need to be taken out of the side temporarily to regain confidence.
Liverpool’s recent defeats to Crystal Palace and Galatasaray have only increased the pressure on Arne Slot’s squad, and all eyes will be on Wirtz when the Reds face Chelsea at Stamford Bridge this weekend. Despite sitting top of the Premier League by two points, Liverpool’s title defence already feels under scrutiny, with the spotlight firmly on their record signing.
