Carragher Weighs In on Mac Allister VAR Flashpoint
Speaking on Sky Sports, Jamie Carragher gave his verdict, insisting the referee made the right call:
> “He does get the ball, but it’s the follow-through that makes it dangerous. If that contact had been a few inches higher, Mac Allister could have been in serious trouble. As it was, he caught him low — right on the boot or ankle. For me, a yellow card is the correct outcome.”
Carragher compared the incident to a recent West Ham clash where a similar full-stretch challenge saw harsher punishment. He stressed that while the intent wasn’t reckless, the aftermath of the tackle made it a painful one for the Argentine.
Meanwhile, Liverpool’s start at Turf Moor was far from convincing. Looking to extend their winning run to four Premier League games, Arne Slot’s side had plenty of the ball but couldn’t find a way through Burnley’s compact defense, who threatened on the counter.
The first half produced ten attempts for the Reds, yet only one truly tested Burnley’s goalkeeper Martin Dubravka — a strike from Andy Robertson, who had replaced Milos Kerkez after 38 minutes.
Mac Allister, still nursing the effects of that heavy challenge, was withdrawn at half-time with Conor Bradley coming on. The reshuffle saw Dominik Szoboszlai drop deeper into midfield as Liverpool sought greater control in the second period.
