Liverpool’s recent struggles have drawn a brutally honest reaction from one of Anfield’s most respected voices — Jamie Carragher. The former Reds defender didn’t mince words as he tore into the team’s defensive frailties following yet another Premier League defeat.
Speaking on Sky Sports Premier League, Carragher broke down Liverpool’s 3–2 loss to Brentford — their fourth consecutive league defeat — calling it the club’s most alarming dip in form since 2021.
“I’m really worried about the lack of physicality in this Liverpool side,” he said. “When you look at players like Conor Bradley getting booked so often, it’s not just about positioning — it’s about confidence and strength.”
Carragher went on to highlight that the problem runs much deeper than just one player.
“Liverpool don’t win first challenges, don’t claim second balls — and that’s not good enough for the Premier League this season,” he added, noting that Brentford’s direct, physical approach completely unsettled Arne Slot’s men.
The former vice-captain also pointed out that Liverpool’s shortage of height and power in key defensive areas continues to make them vulnerable, especially against teams who rely on long throws and aerial duels.
Carragher’s verdict was damning:
> “Right now, this is crisis time for Liverpool. Questions will be asked of the players, the coaches, and those in charge — because with the money spent this summer, this run is simply unacceptable.”
Despite goals from Mo Salah and Milos Kerkez, the Reds slumped to their fourth straight loss, slipping to seventh in the league table. Frustration was clear on the faces of both players and manager Arne Slot as the final whistle blew.
With pressure mounting and defensive flaws laid bare, Liverpool’s next few matches could define their season — and determine whether this “crisis” can be turned around before it’s too late.
